Making Connections

By Aly Pavela
NFTY Membership & Communications Vice President

Hey NFTY! I can’t express how excited I am to see each and every one of you at NFTY Convention 2011 in less than 4 days! This will be my second convention. I remember being insanely nervous for my first convention. All my NFTY best friends were participating in spring semester EIE, and I was terrified I was going to be standing in the corner twiddling my thumbs alone.

Instead of standing in a corner, I took a chance. I asked my NFTY-CWR  friends introduce me to their camp friends and NFTY in Israel friends. I chatted up the people in line with me, and I sat with people I didn’t know at dinner.  I had the best weekend ever with my new friends from NFTY-SoCal, NFTY-PAR, NFTY-SO and everywhere in-between. And these weren’t just friends for a weekend. Some of these people have become friends for a lifetime. The older girl from NFTY-SoCal I befriended at the Dan Nichols concert currently attends University of Wisconsin-Madison with me, and has given me countless amounts of advice, guidance and love as I navigate my way through freshmen year. Additionally, my NFTY-PAR friend, is none other than Julia Carpey, my fellow NFTY Board member and one of my best friends since convention.

This is what I’m looking forward to the most at Convention 2011. Meeting new people, and making connections that I’m sure will last me a lifetime.

So I challenge you. Step out of your comfort zone. Go to a workshop with out your friends. Sit with someone new at services. You have nothing to lose, and absolutely everything to gain.
