NFTY-PAR: Giving the Gift of Comfort

By Jonathan “Skippy” Neff, NFTY-PAR Programming Vice President

During WINSTY, our region was amazing as we gathered together to participate in t’filah (service with our hosting congregation, Adath Emanuel in Mt. Laurel, NJ), programming about what it means to make your mark, and various social action projects, all in celebration of the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

We packaged over 800 bags of food utensils for the homeless, renovated “doggie spas”, volunteered at multiple senior citizen communities where we played Wii with some of the residents (casual…) and played “Are you smarter than a teenager?” while others, prepared and packaged food at the Ronald McDonald House, maintained gardens in partnership with Mt Laurel’s “Green Team”, and so many others.

One of the social action projects that PAR (and I) participated in, is “Cozies 4 Chemo”. Founded by 12-year old Meghan Vizzard, Cozies 4 Chemo is an organization that makes fleece blankets for patients going through chemotherapy. Meghan started the organization when her cousin went through chemotherapy for ovarian cancer and wanted a way to comfort her. She thought of making a fleece blanket to keep her cousin warm, comfortable, and colorful through a time that for many patients and their families, is extremely draining. Her cousin fell in love with the blanket and Meghan (with the aid of her mother) started making more blankets for other chemotherapy patients. They are extremely easy to make and provide so much joy and hope to the people that receive them.

I’m glad we were able to include Cozies 4 Chemo as one of our social action projects for WINSTY. We were able to make over 40 blankets for patients in chemo, bringing up C4C’s total number to over 400 blankets since just this past spring! Members of our PAR community were able to experience the true sensation of Tzedakah as we helped Meghan reach her goal of “giving the gift of comfort” to all.

It was exciting and refreshing to see such hard work, dedication, and care in a young woman. Meghan’s passion and enthusiasm is remarkable. I wish her tremendous success with making Cozies 4 Chemo a thriving organization.
