Winners Announced: Wendy Blickstein Memorial D’var Torah Competition, Winter 2017

We are pleased to announce that Joe Lichtenstein, a sophomore from Temple Emanuel in Roanoke, VA (NFTY Mid-Atlantic Region), is this year’s winner of the Wendy Blickstein Memorial D’var Torah competition. Joe’s D’var Torah, titled, “The Quiet Message” focuses on leadership and authenticity in relationship to Parashat Yitro.

He writes,

“When studying Yitro, I was struck by the juxtaposition of the cataclysmic nature of Exodus and Sinai one one hand, and the single critical message of Jethro on the other. It seemed to me that the Torah produced a great kernel of wisdom from an unlikely, simple source; that leaders are not separate from their people, and that only working together allows true leadership and creative change.”

Joe will be awarded $3,000 to be applied toward attending any NFTY event, URJ camp (such as URJ Kutz Camp), or travel opportunity, including NFTY in IsraelMitzvah Corps programs, and the like. Joe will read his winning D’var Torah at NFTY Convention 2017.

We congratulate Joe and thank all of the incredible teen participants in this year’s Wendy Blickstein Memorial D’var Torah contest.
