The NFTY North American board strongly condemns the xenophobic, racist, antisemitic, and islamophobic nature of the white supremacist, Neo-Nazi demonstration that occurred on Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia. We additionally extend our condolences to the family of Heather Heyer, a counter-protester who was murdered during the clashes.
The violence and hatred present at that rally has no place in America. We must remain vigilant in standing up to the damaging rhetoric and actions of hate groups that spread such abhorrent ideals. These groups’ agendas are designed to target our friends, our neighbors, and us as Jews. In doing so, these Neo-Nazis are targeting the ideals of our nation: equality, freedom, and compassion. We have the opportunity to confront the dangerous tides brought upon us in this moment and advocate for what we know to be true; all people are created B’tzelem Elohim (in the image of God) and no one should face persecution for who they are.
As Jews, we are obligated to fight for what is right and moral in this world. That is applicable now more than ever. It is up to us to ensure that all who have hate in their heart know they do not have a place in our country and do not have a platform to spew their hurtful rhetoric. Let us come together and demonstrate that evil is no match for our compassionate strength.
